Backroads and Banjos

The Autoharp

This episode of Backroads & Banjos focuses on an instrument not often looked at in old-timey and early country recordings, the autoharp. While folks like Ernest Stoneman and the Carter Family used the autoharp in their music, it was not an instrument often given the limelight and was often relegated to duties of a background instrument to provide texture and depth to early recordings. This episode features selections from the Smithsonian Folkway’s collection “Masters of Old-Time Autoharp.”
