Joe B. Mauldin
It was a pleasant surprise in the AM 1690 studios recently when Scott found out during an interview with Brian Hill, Exec. Director of the Atlanta Dogwood Festival that Hill’s father-in-law is none other that Joe B. Mauldin, a native of Lubbock TX and the original bassist with the Crickets and Buddy Holly – and that Joe B would be in town that Saturday! Joe B. was gracious enough to sit down and talk at length with Scott about his career with Buddy Holly and the Crickets, Buddy Holly, Waylon Jennings, Buddy Knox, Ed Sullivan and Mauldin’s subsequent career as an engineer at L.A.’s Gold Star Studios where luminaries such as Phil Spector and Ike and Tina Turner recorded.
Steve Young
This week on Backstage Atlanta Scott’s guest is Steve Young. An American singer, songwriter and guitarist Young is best known for his hit song “Seven Bridges Road”. He is an unsung pioneer of the Americana, Country Rock and Alt Country sounds. Steve Young was also a vital force behind the outlaw movement, writing songs recorded by Waylon Jennings, Hank Williams JR. and many more. A native of Newnan Georgia, Young has lived in South Alabama for many years. Young’s hits include Waylon Jennings’ “Lonesome, On’ry and Mean”, Hank William JR’s “Montgomery in the Rain”, and The Eagles’ “Seven Bridges Road”.
Phil Roy
Last Friday night in Atlanta in McKinnon’s Restaurant on a whim, I stumbled onto a piano bar populated with an enthusiastic crowd of all advanced ages. At the mic was an 80 year old working the floor and bumping while singing a song that sounded old but was unfamiliar to me. The whole scene was great but the song, “This Business of Love”, was fantastic. Turns out that song was featured in the Jim Carey movie, The Mask (1994). I called the – as it turns out, prolific – composer, Phil Roy of Philadelphia, the next day and he is our guest on this week’s Backstage Atlanta.
