Backroads and Banjos
A Night with Art Rosenbaum
“Cacklin’ Hen” is performed here by Earl Murphy, who picked up fiddle playing as a boy from his father, and now plays western swing and bluegrass in addition to traditional fiddle tunes. “Southern Texas” is performed by East Kentucky’s George Gibson, a banjo performer, collector, and expert on the old timey banjo style of his home region. Tony Bryant, from a long line of Piedmont guitarists, plays “Broke Down Engine,” borrowed from another bluesman in his genre, Blind Willie McTell. For “Marmaduke’s Hornpipe,” Earl Murphy is joined by his grandson, Andy Carlson playing the twin fiddles, on this old Missouri fiddle classic.
